SSL certificate monitoring and domain expiry warnings
Get warned before a certificate or a domain registration expires, and get an incident if a certificate is already expired or invalid.
Why expiry catches teams out
Certificates and domain registrations expire on a date set months earlier. Renewal is often tied to one person, one credit card, or one automation that quietly stopped working. When the date passes, browsers show a full-page security warning, or the domain stops resolving, and the site is effectively down for every visitor.
The site can look healthy right up to that moment, so a normal uptime check gives no early signal. Expiry monitoring watches the date itself and warns you while there is still time to renew.
Certificates and domains also expire for different reasons. A certificate may be renewed automatically by your host until an automation breaks, while a domain is renewed by a person or a billing account. Watching both means a failure in either process reaches you well before the date.
How expiry monitoring works
Add an HTTP or HTTPS monitor
Expiry settings live on the monitor for your site, so there is no separate monitor type to create.
Turn on SSL certificate monitoring
For HTTPS URLs, UptimeIO tracks the certificate served by your site, including whether it is expired or invalid.
Turn on domain expiry monitoring
For HTTP, keyword, and DNS monitors on a publicly registered domain, registration data is looked up over RDAP and re-checked hourly.
Receive warnings before the date
A warning is sent to your alert channels at each threshold you selected.
- 30 days
- 15 days
- 7 days
- 1 day
What you configure
Both checks use the same warning thresholds: 30, 15, 7, and 1 days before expiry.
- Certificate expiry warnings: choose which thresholds to use. At least one is required.
- Certificate validity: detect expired, self-signed, or otherwise invalid certificates.
- Domain expiry warnings: choose the thresholds, which are all selected by default.
- Subdomains are checked against their registrable domain, so app.example.com is checked as example.com.
What alerts you get
A warning at each threshold goes to your alert channels. Warnings do not open an incident, because the site is still up.
An expired or invalid certificate does open an incident. It resolves on its own once a valid certificate is seen.
- Email, Slack, Telegram, Pushover, and webhooks, on every plan
- Some country-code domains do not publish an expiry date. These show as not published and send no warnings.
- Domain expiry applies to publicly registered domains, not IP addresses or internal names.
Which plans include it
SSL certificate and domain expiry warnings are included on every plan, including Free. Free includes 50 monitors with 5-minute checks. Pro includes 100 monitors and Scale includes 300, both with 30-second checks.

Frequently asked questions
What is SSL certificate monitoring?
SSL certificate monitoring checks the certificate your site serves and warns you before it expires. It also detects certificates that are already expired, self-signed, or otherwise invalid.
How far in advance does UptimeIO warn me about an expiring certificate?
Warnings are sent 30, 15, 7, and 1 days before expiry. You choose which of these thresholds to use, and at least one is required.
What happens if a certificate has already expired?
An expired or invalid certificate opens an incident, and your alert channels are notified. The incident resolves on its own once UptimeIO sees a valid certificate.
Can UptimeIO monitor domain name expiry?
Yes, for HTTP, keyword, and DNS monitors on a publicly registered domain. Registration data is looked up over RDAP and re-checked hourly, with warnings 30, 15, 7, and 1 days before expiry.
Why does my domain show expiry as not published?
Some country-code domain registries do not publish an expiry date. For those domains UptimeIO shows not published and sends no domain expiry warnings.
Is expiry monitoring available on the Free plan?
Yes. SSL certificate expiry warnings and domain expiry warnings are included on every plan, including Free.
